PUC-SP Center for Pragmatism Studies

26 YEARS OF INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS ON PRAGMATISM

About the Center for Pragmatism Studies-PUCSP

About us

The Center for Pragmatism Studies (CEP in Portuguese initials) was founded in 1998 by Prof. Dr. Ivo A. Ibri (PUC-SP) at the Philosophy Graduate Program at Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, Brazil (PUC-SP). CEP is dedicated to promoting studies about classical and contemporary pragmatism by bringing together researchers and students interested in pragmatism in itself and in its theoretical relationships with other philosophical disciplines as well.

Activities

International Meetings on Pragmatism

In 1998 the CEP organized the First Meeting on Pragmatism, which was hosted at PUC-SP and then composed only of Brazilian researchers.

From 2000s onwards, the Meetings became annual and began to be called International Meetings on Pragmatism (EIP in Portuguese initials). Since then, it has counted on the participation of renowned scholars from the field of pragmatism research.

Given its growing relevance year after year, the EIP keeps intensifying its place on the international agenda of events linked to this field of research.

Research Groups

The Research Groups of the Center for Pragmatism Studies are guided by four lines of research, namely, Pragmatism and Ethics, Pragmatism and Aesthetics, and Pragmatism and Logic.

The studies around these lines have been a useful source of topics for master's and doctoral dissertations from the Postgraduate Studies in Philosophy Program at PUC-SP and other postgraduate programs in the area.

In 2016 through the Center for Pragmatism Studies, the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) has joined the group of five national Graduate Philosophy Programs responsible for the foundation of ANPOF’s Working Group on Semiotics and Pragmatism.

The Center for Pragmatism Studies seeks to grow all its activities, along with an intense exchange with other international research centers in the area, in order to promote a specific approach to pragmatism, recognized in Brazil and abroad, which is deeply committed to an ongoing dialogue with the tradition of the history of philosophy.
